The Importance of Handwashing

We asked a Registered Nurse what is the best way to prevent contracting the novel coronavirus. Here’s what she had to say:

Facts Not Fear

As we know, if we properly wash our hands with soap and water for about 20 seconds, we are actively participating in the promotion of health and wellness by preventing the spread of unwanted illnesses to our friends, family, loved ones, and communities. Hand washing plays such a critical role because when we wash our hands, we are cleansing away unwanted pathogens, bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms that cause harm and disease to the human body.

Many experts believe hand washing alone can be more effective than medications and vaccines against COVID-19. According to the CDC (2020), hand washing is the most powerful weapon against the spread of disease. Please remember, hand washing saves lives! It is the best way to protect yourself from getting sick and to stay healthy.

During this time, it is crucial that in order to continue to promote the health and wellness of our society we all must have access to soap and clean water. Evidence-based practice has proven that hand hygiene effectively slows the spread of harmful bacteria. I fully support raising awareness and changing behaviors in order to make significant impacts on preventing the spread of infection and to help the world get well!
